Though all of the poles are severely weathered, much of their original detail survives as testimony to the skill and sophistication of their carvers. They are preserved as they were found at the village sites. The totem poles in the Heritage Center were created by carvers during the height of totem pole carving on the Northwest Coast, between the middle and the end of the 19th century. Forest Service provided technical assistance. Elders also provided valuable cultural and historical information about the totem poles. With the guidance of Native elders, the Alaska State Museum and the Alaska Native Brotherhood carried out the totem pole retrieval. The inhabitants of these villages moved to Ketchikan and other towns at the beginning of the 20th century in order to be near schools and churches, as well as the canneries, mines, and sawmills that offered employment. The Totem Heritage Center houses an invaluable collection of 19th century totem poles retrieved in the 1970s from the Tlingit villages on Tongass Island and Village Island and from the Haida village of Old Kasaan on Prince of Wales Island.

One important step, which I discovered by accident, is that I must close LR CC on the Macbook, otherwise LR Classic will not sync the new collection (even though it is visible in LR Web). The albums become visible as Collections in LR Classic, but within a Collection Set called 'From Lightroom', which is automatically created by Lightroom. When I get home, I start LR Classic on my Windows desktop. The album or albums are visible online in LR Web (as long as I have signed in). I will also do as much editing as I think they need, and perhaps post them here or to other social media. When I'm travelling, I import all photos to LR CC on the Macbook, and add them to a new album. I use LR CC on my Macbook Pro (which has a SD card slot, making importing easy). I also get irritated by the way in which LR CC and LR Classic work together, but I have found a way that is good enough for me. Interrater reliability (also called interobserver reliability) measures the degree of agreement between different people observing or assessing the same thing. Remember that changes or recall bias can be expected to occur in the participants over time, and take these into account. When planning your methods of data collection, try to minimize the influence of external factors, and make sure all samples are tested under the same conditions. When designing tests or questionnaires, try to formulate questions, statements, and tasks in a way that won’t be influenced by the mood or concentration of participants. You devise a questionnaire to measure the IQ of a group of participants (a property that is unlikely to change significantly over time). You administer the test two months apart to the same group of people, but the results are significantly different, so the test-retest reliability of the IQ questionnaire is low.
